Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion:
Located just off of Hwy 80 or the end of Hwy 80 at Tybrisa Street. This is a must see when you visit Tybee Island. A great place to see and walk on the beach. Beach chair rentals and umbrellas are for rent on both sides of the pier. Also, fishing rods can be rented on the pier also. The pier is the focal point of the southend of Tybee Island with many of the shops and restraunts in the southend area. The pier has many events throughout the spring and summer with weddings and live entertainment on the weekends. The pier is open to the public and free admision.
The original Tybrisa Pavilion stood for 75 years as a landmark on Tybee Island. Built in 1891 by the Central of Georgia Railroad, it was a well-known getaway for Savannah residents for the day and seasonal visitors. Tybee Island was known as a south atlantic resort and savannah's beach. Its open dance floor overlooking the beach and ocean made it a legendary stop on the “Big Band” tour and for five decades of entertainers. Fire destroyed the pier in 1967 when the bowling alley on the pier caught fire.

Tybee Island History
Tybee Island started as a military instalation.Fort Screven, on Tybee Island was established on March 18, 1898, though construction was not completed until 1901. Its original name, Camp Graham, was changed in honor of James Screven. Screven was a Georgia Militia brigadier general who was killed at Midway Church in 1778, during the Revolutionary war. The Georgia Legislature had passed a law in 1786 providing for a fort to be named in honor of General Screven, but never was constructed. In 1808, the Federal government obtained jurisdiction over the property on Tybee Island that would become Fort Screven. Actual title was acquired in 1875, and the fort -- armed with 20 guns -- was active in the Spanish-American War and both World Wars. From 1897 to 1947, Fort Screven was an integral part of America's coastal defense system. Troops trained and stood guard on Tybee Island throughout the Spanish-American War of 1898, World War I, and World War II. In 1947 the Fort was closed and sold to the town of Tybee.
Ordered by General James Oglethorpe, Governor of the 13th colony, in 1732, the Tybee Island Light Station has been guiding mariners safe entrance into the Savannah River for over 270 years. The Tybee Island Light Station is one of America's most intact having all of its historic support buildings on its five-acre site. You can learn more at the Tybee Island Lighthouse Website
Fort Pulaski is another part of History just off Tybee Island a national landmark. A civil war fort built to protect the Savannah port. You can find out more about the fort at ther website and what Fort Pulaski has to offer while visiting. Fort Pulaski Website
